DeCinces: Signing Glaus No ‘Major Deal’

Former Angel third baseman Doug DeCinces, the advisor for first-round draft choice Troy Glaus, said he has had enough discussions with the Angels to believe negotiations to sign Glaus “shouldn’t be a major deal.”

DeCinces said he didn’t think Glaus, the third pick in the draft, would be so bold as to sign immediately and set the market for top picks though. Braden Looper, the third pick in 1996, signed with St. Louis for $1.675 million, but Glaus is expected to command a bonus of $2 million or higher.

“I think Detroit and Philadelphia [who had the first two picks] have a good idea what it will take to sign their guys, and we’ll fall right in behind that,” DeCinces said. “I don’t want a confrontational negotiation.”

DeCinces said serious negotiations would probably begin next week.

Second baseman Luis Alicea, who has been hampered by a sore right hamstring for two weeks, was back in the lineup Tuesday night after missing three games. But Manager Terry Collins said it was obvious Alicea was still favoring the leg, and so Alicea was returned to the bench for Wednesday night’s game.
