The San Fernando Civic Assn. is accepting applications for the 65th annual Miss San Fernando Pageant--an event organizers say will be unlike any to have come before.

Although final changes have yet to been made, organizers hinted that, among other things, they may drop the word “pageant” from the title in an effort to distance the event from traditional beauty contests.

“The whole event is based on professional service and service to the community,” said Joe Sandoval, program coordinator for the San Fernando Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s never been a traditional beauty pageant, but we want to change any misconceptions that anyone might have about what it’s about,” he said.

The event, which offers $2,500 in college scholarships to the winners, is open to unmarried women in the San Fernando Valley between the ages of 17 and 21. It will be held on April 17.

Miss San Fernando contestants are required to perform volunteer work and find sponsors from the local business community. They also participate in a series of workshops on such subjects as public speaking and professional appearance.

Scoring is based on a combination of factors, including personal interviews, an essay and speeches made the night of the event, officials said.

“It’s a great opportunity for character building and friendship building,” Sandoval said. “We want to encourage all young women interested in the scholarship money to get involved.”

Applications, which are due by March 16, are available at the chamber office, 519 S. Brand Blvd., San Fernando.
