D.C. United Defeats MetroStars

Jaime Moreno and Marco Etcheverry scored second-half goals and D.C. United won its eighth straight, a 2-1 victory over the New York-New Jersey MetroStars Saturday night before a crowd of 16,729 at Washington.

United, 21-5 overall, improved to 13-1 in RFK Stadium.

The MetroStars (14-12) led at the half after Diego Sonora scored in the 41st minute. Moreno tied the game in the 59th minute and Etcheverry got the game-winner in the 78th minute.

The MetroStars still need to win one of six remaining games to clinch an playoff berth.

Etcheverry’s ninth goal of the season came on a bouncing shot from 32 yards that beat MetroStars keeper Tony Meola to the right corner of the net.

Columbus 3, Tampa Bay 1--Stern John scored the tying and go-ahead goals and assisted on the third goal as the Crew beat the Mutiny before 25,110 at Columbus, Ohio.

John has 17 goals, tying Raul Diaz Arce of the New England Revolution for the league lead.

While Tampa Bay (7-19) went ahead in the 40th minute on a goal by Dominic Kinnear, John scored in the 59th and put the Crew (12-12) ahead in the 76th. Andy Williams scored his first MLS goal in the 84th minute. Williams also got an assist on John’s second goal to tie an MLS record with assists in five consecutive games, his first five since joining the team after the World Cup, where he played for Jamaica.

San Jose 2, Dallas 1--Victor Mella and Shawn Medved scored shootout goals and David Kramer stopped three Dallas attempts to give the Clash (10-15) a 2-1 victory over the Burn (12-14) before 11,706 at San Jose.

San Jose opened the scoring in the 32nd minute on Ronald Cerritos’ 10th goal.
