For 85 minutes, it looked as if alter Zenga’s first game as the New England Revolution’s player-coach would be a successful one. But second-half substitute Tyrone Marshall beat the goalie Zenga in the 86th minute, then scored in a shootout and the Miami Fusion won, 2-1, before 7,211 at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Henry Gutierrez, Leo Cullen and Diego Serna also scored in the shootout for the Fusion, who won the shootout, 4-3.

Before Marshall’s goal, Zenga made eight saves, including a stop of Nelson Vargas’ penalty kick in the 80th minute.

“Next time we might have more luck,” Zenga said. “Miami had to try and tie the game, and they were more aggressive.”

Giovanni Savarese made history in his New England debut, scoring 22 seconds into the match. The goal broke the MLS record for the fastest goal to start a match by four seconds, set in 1997.

New York-New Jersey 1, Columbus 0--Defender Mike Petke scored on a header off a free kick in the 80th minute, lifting the MetroStars over the Crew before 20,307 at East Rutherford, N.J.

The victory was the second in a row for the MetroStars, who opened their first three MLS seasons with 0-3 starts.

New York-New Jersey goalie Mike Ammann made only four saves for the shutout, and the absence of playmaker Tab Ramos, out because of a bruised shin, forced the MetroStars to move their defenders forward, enabling Petke to score his second career goal.

Petke powered his header past goalkeeper Mark Dougherty after Miles Joseph’s pass to the far post. A foul by defender Jason Farrell on Petke set up the free kick.
