Top-Seeded Wolverines Eliminated
North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake had designs on winning the Corona del Mar/National High School All-American boys’ tennis tournament, but those hopes were dashed when the top-seeded Wolverines were upset, 5-4, by unseeded Los Gatos in the quarterfinals Friday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
Steve Stege defeated Harvard-Westlake’s Sam Wagner, 9-7, at No. 2 singles, and the Wolverines’ Michael Vann fell to Chase Hubner, 9-7, at No. 5 singles in the deciding matches.
Second-seeded Santa Barbara edged Los Angeles Brentwood, 5-4, in the quarterfinals.
The Dons’ top player, Stanford-bound Blake Muller, rallied from a 6-3 deficit to defeat Daniel Freeman in a tiebreaker, 9-8, and Chris Ho and Mike Williams rebounded from a 4-1 deficit to tie at 6-6 and then took the last two games for an 8-6 victory.
Santa Barbara faces Corona del Mar, which beat Riverdale (N.Y.) Horace Mann, 7-2, in the semifinals at 11 a.m. today at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club. Irvine Woodbridge, a 6-3 winner over Potomac (Md.) Bullis, will play Los Gatos in the other semifinal. The championship match is scheduled for 3 p.m. today at the Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach.
