Sundin Gets Goal No. 500 in Win
Mats Sundin’s 500th goal capped one of the best games of his career.
Sundin beat Miikka Kiprusoff with a long shot 50 seconds into overtime to complete a hat trick and give the Maple Leafs a 5-4 victory over the Calgary Flames on Saturday night at Toronto.
“It’s a special way to get it. I’ll remember this day throughout my whole life,” Sundin said.
Sundin also had an assist for the Maple Leafs, who have played four consecutive overtime games. Darcy Tucker and Alex Steen also scored for the Maple Leafs, who rallied after losing a two-goal lead.
Mark Giordano scored twice for the Flames, who had only five goals in their first four games.
Buffalo 7, New York Rangers 4 -- Chris Drury had the first three-goal game of his career, and also had an assist at Buffalo, N.Y., to help the Sabres win their fifth consecutive game.
Brendan Shanahan had two goals for the Rangers.
Edmonton 4, Colorado 3 -- Petr Sykora and Ryan Smyth scored twice as the Oilers won at Denver.
Atlanta 4, Washington 3 -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored in overtime to end his longest goal drought at the start of a season, and the Thrashers won at Washington.
Ottawa 3, Montreal 2 -- Antoine Vermette and Mike Fisher scored in the shootout to help the Senators end their three-game losing streak at Montreal.
New Jersey 3, Philadelphia 2 -- Brian Gionta broke a tie early in the third period and Martin Brodeur made 25 saves to lead the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J. Mike Knuble scored twice for the Flyers.
St. Louis 4, Chicago 3 -- Radek Dvorak scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period and had an assist as the Blues won at home.
New York Islanders 4, Boston 1 -- Goalie Mike Dunham, filling in for injured Rick DiPietro, stopped 31 shots to help the Islanders win their home opener at Uniondale, N.Y.
Carolina 5, Pittsburgh 1 -- Eric Staal got Carolina’s go-ahead goal early in the game to win his matchup with younger brother as the Hurricanes won at Pittsburgh.
Jordan Staal, an 18-year-old Penguins rookie playing against his older brother for the first time in the NHL, did not score.
Tampa Bay 4, Florida 1 -- Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis scored rare Tampa Bay power-play goals, helping the host Lightning stop a three-game losing streak.
Minnesota 5, Columbus 0 -- Brian Rolston scored two goals and had an assist at St. Paul, Minn., to help the Wild remain unbeaten.
Nashville 4, Phoenix 1 -- Scott Hartnell and Paul Kariya each scored to help the host Predators get their first victory.
The Coyotes have lost four in a row.
