Massive fire rips through commercial building in South L.A.
Firefighters on Friday battled a massive fire that swept through a commercial building in a South Los Angeles neighborhood.
It is unclear how the fire started at 5:33 a.m. inside the abandoned building in the 1800 block of East Washington Boulevard, but flames ate through the roof, said Margaret Stewart, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Nearly 120 firefighters tackled the flames for about an hour and worked to stop the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings, she said. No one was injured in the blaze.
In large, old abandoned buildings constructed with heavy timber, it is not uncommon for a fire to be burning for several hours before someone notices and reports it, Stewart said.
Firefighters put out the fire at 6:21 a.m., but were still working to secure the area before investigators began looking for a cause of the blaze.
