Los Angeles County coroner’s investigators plan to examine the Hollywood Hills area on Wednesday where human remains were discovered.

The decomposed body was found in the hills near the 3300 block of Bonnie Hill Drive on Tuesday at about 5:30 p.m. Investigators and criminalists planned to dig up the remains and search for evidence of a cause of death, coroner’s Lt. Mario Sainz said.

The remains were found after a body part was spotted protruding from the ground by hikers, he said. Los Angeles police said they were also investigating the find.

Daniel Dayton, 21, told KTLA-TV that he was hiking with his brother and dog near a creek bed when they found they saw a human leg sticking out of the dirt. The leg was clothed.

In August, hikers found a dead man hanging from a door frame in an abandoned Department of Water and Power building south of the Hollywood Reservoir, authorities said.

That same month, the body of Drew Bernstein, the founder of clothing company Lip Service, was found dead on a remote trail near Laurel Canyon Park. Coroner’s officials said he shot himself.
