Suspects sought in ambush shooting of San Bernardino County deputy
A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy serving an eviction notice Tuesday was shot before he got out of his car by one or more gunmen in another vehicle, authorities said.
Sheriff’s spokesman Lori Miller said it is believed the shooter or shooters were still in their vehicle when they opened fire on the deputies, who were in separate cars in the 1400 block of East Date Street near Del Rosa Avenue.
The bullets pierced the front windshield of one of the two cruisers, striking the deputy, Miller said.
San Bernardino police said the deputies were able to return fire before the shooter or shooters fled. A vehicle matching the suspects’ car was found nearby.
Miller said the wounded deputy was listed in good condition at a hospital. Investigators did not know whether the shooter was connected in any way to the eviction notice, she said.
The deputy’s white police cruiser showed visible signs of gunfire with bullet holes dotting the front windshield. An elementary school, Jefferson Hunt, was placed on lock-down following the shooting.
