Perris man with 1-year-old in truck arrested in alleged DUI crash

A 41-year-old man who may have been driving under the influence Thursday with a 1-year-old passenger when he collided with a truck in Perris, killing another man, has been arrested, authorities said.

Andre Elgin Williams was arrested on suspicion of murder and felony driving under the influence causing great bodily injury or death, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Williams was driving a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup truck northbound on Old Elsinore Road north of Michael Road around 1:17 p.m. when he hit a southbound GMC pickup driven by a 62-year-old man, the CHP said.

Williams allegedly crossed the double yellow lines and struck the other car, whose driver has yet to be identified, according to the CHP. Neither driver was speeding at the time.

CHP spokesman Travis Monks identified the child in Williams’ car as his son.

“After the collision, Williams car caught on fire and burned completely,” Monks said, noting Williams and his son were out of the car when the fire ignited.

Child protective services turned the child over to a family member.

Williams was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside County and is due in court next week.
