Angels beat San Diego, 9-6
AT THE PLATE: Torii Hunter and Vernon Wells hit their first homers of the spring, back-to-back shots, and Mark Trumbo capped a four-run, fourth-inning rally with a two-run homer to left-center, his major league-tying fifth homer of the spring. Trumbo reached for a low-and-away, 0-and-2 pitch from left-hander Wade LeBlanc and drove it over the left-center field wall. Brandon Wood also homered to left in the sixth.
ON THE MOUND: Joel Pineiro gave up two-run home runs to Eric Patterson and Ryan Ludwick during a four-inning outing in which he allowed eight hits, struck out five and walked one. The sinker-ball specialist threw a lot more sliders and changeups than he would in a regular-season game. He left a few balls up, “and you saw the consequences of that,” he said.
EXTRA BASES: Kendrys Morales, recovering from a broken lower-left leg, was supposed to run curves Tuesday but was held to running to first base — at less than 100%. It’s appearing more likely the first baseman won’t be ready for the March 31 season opener. If he is, he’ll probably open as a designated hitter.
UP NEXT: Jered Weaver faces Arizona and right-hander Ian Kennedy at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
ON THE AIR: Radio: KLAA 830.
