Football: Another week of intrigue for Trinity, Serra leagues

If you weren’t intrigued by last week’s openers in the Trinity and Serra leagues, there’s more to look forward to this weekend.

Can any team slow down unbeaten St. John Bosco (6-0)? Orange Lutheran (6-0) gets the next shot on Friday night at St. John Bosco.

“We have to do our thing,” Orange Lutheran Coach Chuck Petersen said. “It’s really not who we are playing. It’s about us trying to do the best we can. I like our kids. They’re going to put forth a great effort.”

But what about St. John Bosco, a team that has scored 75 and 56 points the last two weeks against Crenshaw and Santa Margarita?

“They could probably play some small college teams,” said Petersen, a former Air Force assistant. “They don’t have a weakness. I’m hoping USC takes a look at [Jason] Negro. He’s a heck of a coach and attracts a lot of kids.”

JSerra (6-1) will try to rebound against Santa Ana Mater Dei 7-0) at Saddleback College. And, in what could be a key game to keep alive playoff hopes, Santa Margarita (3-3) plays Servite (3-3) at Cerritos College.

In the Serra League, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (5-2) could deliver a knockout blow to Mission Hills Alemany (5-2), which has been reeling from consecutive losses to Norco and Loyola. Crespi (2-4) makes its league debut under Coach Troy Thomas against improving Loyola (4-3) at Valley College. The Celts have had some injuries and could be close to full strength.

Remember, the Trinity is guaranteed three Pac-5 Division playoff spots. The Serra is guaranteed two playoff spots. There are two at-large berths. Every game matters.
