Baseball: Birmingham wins for the first time against Chatsworth since 2002

 Birmingham pulled off the shocker of the week on Friday, knocking off Chatsworth, 5-4, in a West Valley League thriller. It was Birmingham’s first win over Chatsworth since the 2002 season.

In the seventh, freshman Justin Rorick led off with a single. After a walk, Victor Robles put down a bunt that was thrown away, allowing Rorick to score the winning run. Alexis Miranda had two hits and two RBIs for the Patriots.


El Camino Real completed a sweep of Taft with a 7-2 victory. Brian Gallagher threw a complete game. Erik Whittlesey had two hits and three RBIs. Granada Hills defeated Cleveland, 10-6. Justin Castaneda had four hits and three RBIs. Kyle Feffer added three hits.

In the East Valley League, Poly handed North Hollywood its first league defeat, 3-1. Isaac Gutierrez, a sophomore, threw the complete game. Gerry Perez had two hits and two RBIs. Arleta defeated Grant, 2-1. Eddie Ramirez had three hits.


In the Mission League, Alemany defeated Chaminade, 8-5, in nine innings. Carter Yankie threw six scoreless innings of relief. Alex Mckenna had three hits, including the game-winning RBI in the ninth. Thomas Luevano added two hits and three RBIs, including a two-run double. St. Francis defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 3-2.

Denz’l Chapman had three hits in Gardena Serra’s 7-2 win over Cathedral.

In the San Gabriel Valley League, Warren defeated Gahr, 1-0, behind Alan Trejo and Keaton Freire, who combined for a two-hitter. Warren is 9-1.

In the Moore League, Long Beach Wilson defeated Long Beach Poly, 6-2. Josh Goldberg had two hits and two RBIs. Tyler Radcliffe threw a one-hitter.


In the South Coast League, Mission Viejo defeated Trabuco Hills, 2-1. Stephen Young threw the complete game.

In the Trinity League, Santa Margarita won its third consecutive game this week with a 5-3 win over Mater Dei. Griffin Canning threw three shutout innings. JJ Carr went three for three. JSerra stayed in first place with a 6-1 win over Orange Lutheran. Chase Strumpf, Parker Joe Robinson, Davis Wendzel, Devin Madigan and Christian Molfetta each had two hits.

In the Marmonte League, Moorpark defeated Simi Valley, 4-1. Chase Fredrick threw a four-hitter, striking out three and walking none. Agoura defeated Newbury Park, 6-1. Andy Sondreeal struck out six and walked none. Dylan Bahr had two hits. Royal defeated Westlake, 4-3. Thousand Oaks defeated Calabasas, 3-1. Jeff Wilson had four hits.

In the Valle Vista League, Baldwin Park got complete game from Anthony Franco, who also had four RBIs in an 11-1 win over Nogales.


In the Pacific League, Burroughs defeated Muir, 9-1. Brian Gadsby had eight strikeouts in Crescenta Valley’s 4-1 win over Burbank.

El Segundo defeated Beverly Hills, 9-1. Noah Bergren went three for three.

In the Tri-Valley League, Oaks Christian defeated Oak Park, 7-6. Noah Prewett hit two home runs. The potential tying run was thrown out at the plate to end the game. It was Tyson Quolas throwing the ball to Riley Helland, who fired it to catcher Adam Kerner.

In the Sierra League, Chino Hills defeated Damien, 7-5, rallying from a 5-1 deficit. Jake Tayler and Cody Sporrer each had two hits.

In the Century League, Foothill defeated Esperanza, 8-7.

In the Channel League, Gabe Grandcolas threw a three-hitter in Santa Barbara’s 4-1 win over San Marcos.

Sophomore Kyle Cuellar had a triple, three singles and four RBIs in La Salle’s 10-9 win over St. Paul.

Tustin defeated Cypress, 12-3. Trey Ryan had two hits and three RBIs. Dominic Fletcher had two doubles and three RBIs for Cypress. Cypress won the earlier game, 13-1. Mark Hyun went three for three.

Bishop Amat completed a sweep of Bishop Montgomery, 7-3. Christian Moya had a two-run home run. Anthony Walters contributed three hits.

In Las Vegas, Riverton Utah defeated Hart, 10-9.

Sierra Canyon swept a doubleheader from Heritage Christian, 8-6 and 3-1. Wes Wright went three for four in the first game. In the second game, David Verdin had two hits.
