Kellen Winslow Jr. reportedly will sign with New England Patriots
Kellen Winslow Jr. has agreed to a one-year contract with the New England Patriots, according to a report Tuesday morning on ESPN.com.
Winslow is an eight-year veteran tight end who made the Pro Bowl with the Cleveland Browns in 2007, when he caught for a career-high 1,106 yards to go with 82 receptions and five touchdowns. He has hit the five-touchdown mark two other times, in 2009 and 2010 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
After catching 75 passes for 763 yards and two touchdowns for the Bucs last season, Winslow was traded to Seattle during the off-season but was cut by the Seahawks earlier this month.
Winslow’s reported signing by the Patriots seems to show that New England has no intention of changing its two tight-end sets after Aaron Hernandez suffered a right ankle injury during a 20-18 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The Patriots have offered no timetable for Hernandez’s return.
As New England made its run to the Super Bowl last season, the tight end position emerged as a key component in the team’s pass-happy offense. Pro Bowler Rob Gronkowski led the way with 90 receptions for 1,327 yards and a team-high 17 touchdowns.
Hernandez added 79 receptions for 910 yards and seven touchdowns for the Patriots last season and had six catches for 59 yards and a touchdown in their season-opening victory over the Tennessee Titans this year.
