Natascha McElhone, from ‘Californication’ to ‘Fatal Attraction’

Natascha McElhone will not be ignored.

The British actress, who has played David Duchovny’s on-and-off lover for six seasons on the Showtime comedy “Californication,” will be taking on the role immortalized by Glenn Close in the upcoming London stage adaptation of the 1987 movie “Fatal Attraction.”

The play, directed by the award-winning Trevor Nunn, is set to begin performances March 8 at London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket.

James Dearden, who wrote the movie’s screenplay as well as the short film on which the movie was based, is authoring the new play. No casting for the roles originated by Michael Douglas and Anne Archer has been announced.

McElhone will play Alex Forrest, a single working woman who enters into a brief, steamy affair with a married man, only to be spurned and cast aside. Refusing to be ignored, she becomes unhinged and commences stalking her former lover and his family.

The 1987 movie, directed by Adrian Lyne, features a climactic scene that was reshot after it tested poorly with audiences. It remains unclear if the play will follow the original ending (inspired by the opera “Madama Butterfly”) or the revised one -- or if it will feature an entirely new conclusion.
