College basketball: Ohio State upsets Wisconsin; Gonzaga, St. Mary’s cruise to wins

C.J. Jackson scored 18 points on four-for-four shooting from three-point range and Ohio State upset No. 16 Wisconsin, 83-73, on Thursday night in Columbus, Ohio.

JaQuan Lyle had 17 points and Jae’Sean Tate added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Buckeyes (16-13, 6-10 Big Ten), who snapped a three-game losing streak and beat a ranked team for the first time in nearly a year.

Bronson Koenig had 27 points for Wisconsin (22-6, 11-4), which lost the lead in the game’s first minute and could never get any traction. The Badgers have lost three of four.

Ohio State led by 12 points with 10 minutes left on a three-pointer by Lyle and never let Wisconsin get closer than nine points. They led by 20 with 4:39 to go and cruised to the win, beating Wisconsin for the first time in the last four tries.

After Wisconsin’s Vitto Brown made a three-pointer to start the game, the Buckeyes answered with a 13-2 run and wouldn’t relinquish the lead. Five Ohio State players made three-pointers and they went into halftime with a 44-31 lead — despite the efforts of Koenig, who had 14 points on four-for-seven shooting from beyond the arc for the Badgers.

No. 1 Gonzaga 96, at San Diego 38: Josh Perkins and Jordan Mathews scored 15 points apiece while Johnathan Williams had 14 points and 19 rebounds for the Bulldogs, who improved to 29-0 and clincedh the West Coast Conference title.

The 58-point victory margin was the biggest of the season for Gonzaga, which also has won games by 47, 46 and 39 points. And it was merely the latest laugher for Gonzaga (17-0 WCC), the only unbeaten team in Division I. It has won all 17 conference games by double digits. Nigel Williams-Goss scored 14 points and Zach Collins had 12 for Gonzaga.

Olin Carter III scored 15 for San Diego (12-17, 5-12), which has lost six straight and 39 of its last 42 games to Gonzaga.

No. 20 St. Mary’s 78, at Pepperdine 49: Jock Landale had 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Gaels (25-3, 15-2 West Coast), who had won 10 of their last 11 games. Their only loss in that stretch was to No. 1 Gonzaga. Lamond Murray Jr. had 17 points for Pepperdine (9-20, 5-12), which lost its third consecutive game.

A power outage caused the lights to go out with 18:41 left in the second half. Pepperdine official Roger Horne said power surges throughout campus caused the 15-minute delay. Players stayed loose by shooting in the dark.

The delay didn’t slow down Saint Mary’s, which led 41-21 before the lights went out. Landale, the junior center from Australia, had an empathic dunk for the first basket after play resumed and the Gaels cruised from there.

at No. 15 Cincinnati 87, Memphis 74: Jacob Evans III scored 12 of his 15 points during a dominant first half as the Bearcats held on for their 25th consecutive home victory.

Cincinnati (25-3, 14-1 American Athletic) led by as many as 24 points during its highest-scoring opening half in conference play this season, pulling ahead 51-32 at the break. The Tigers cut the lead to six points before fading.

The Bearcats’ front line dominated. Gary Clark had 13 points and nine rebounds while Kyle Washington had 16 points and six rebounds.

Memphis (18-10, 8-7) has dropped a season-high three straight. Jeremiah Martin led the Tigers with 23 points and Dedric Lawson had 21 with 10 rebounds.

The Tigers cut the lead to 75-69 on Martin’s three-point play with 5:18 left. Evans’ three-pointer — his only basket of the second half — ended the comeback.

PAC-12

Utah 86, at Colorado 81: Kyle Kuzma scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half as the Utes won their seventh in a row over the Buffaloes. David Collette added 14 points for Utah (18-10, 9-7 Pac-12). Derrick White had 31 points and four blocked shots for Colorado (16-13, 6-10).

SOUTHLAND

Men

at Loyola Marymount 53, San Francisco 51: Steven Haney scored 18 points and the Lions held on despite making only four of their last eight free throws in the final 30 seconds. The win also keeps LMU (14-14, 7-10 West Coast) in position for the sixth seed into the conference tournament with a bye into the quarterfinals. USF (19-11, 9-8) fell to fifth.

Cal Poly 78, at Long Beach State 71: Both teams made 25 of of 61 from the field, but the Mustangs (9-18, 4-9 Big West) made 13 three-pointers to three for the 49ers (13-17, 8-6). Temidayo Yussuf led all scorers with 24 for Long Beach State.

at UC Davis 96, Cal State Northridge 85: Brynton Lemar made eight of 11 three-point attempts and scored 28 points for the Aggies (17-11, 9-4 Big West), who made 10 of 12 from beyond the arc during the first half. Darin Johnson had 24 points for the Matadors (11-15, 7-6).

at UC Santa Barbara 68, UC Riverside 61: Eric Childress made five three-pointers and scored 21 points, Clifton Powell Jr. added 16 points, and the Gauchos (5-21, 3-11 Big West) won for only the second time in 11 games. The Highlanders (7-18, 5-9) didn’t score for the first 5:28 of the second half.
