Dodgers place Hanley Ramirez on disabled list, call up Darwin Barney

Hanley Ramirez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with what the Dodgers described as a strained side muscle.

Ramirez was replaced on the active roster by recently acquired infielder Darwin Barney, who was called up from triple-A Albuquerque.

The typical recovery time for a strained oblique is about a month. For what it’s worth, Manager Don Mattingly said he thought Ramirez could play in 10 days or so.

“I feel like we’re being a little bit cautious,” Mattingly said.

Considering the source, this could be complete nonsense. Mattingly has admitted he dispenses misleading medical information on his players.

In Ramirez’s absence, Miguel Rojas will start at shortstop for the second consecutive day.

Mattingly said Barney could also play shortstop.

Barney, 28, won a Gold Glove Award as a second baseman with the Chicago Cubs in 2012.

Batting only .232 in 72 games with the Cubs this season, Barney was designated for assignment on July 22. The Dodgers acquired him in exchange for a minor leaguer less than a week later.
