The CONCACAF playoff game between the U.S. and Mexico for a spot in the Confederations Cup will be held Oct. 9 at the Rose Bowl, the confederation announced Sunday.

CONCACAF will release a portion of tickets to each confederation for sale to official supporter groups. The public sale will begin in September.

The two countries won the last two CONCACAF Gold Cup tournaments, the U.S. in 2013 and Mexico on Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Jamaica. As a result, the teams must meet in a one-game playoff to determine who will represent the region in the 2017 Confederations Cup, a pre-World Cup tuneup in Russia.

CONCACAF officials said the Rose Bowl was one of a handful of U.S. sites considered for the game.

This month, the Pasadena City Council approved the use of the stadium for the game with city officials being told the event would bring in a miniumum of $400,000 in revenue.

The four largest crowds in U.S. national team history were at the Rose Bowl. Two of them were for games against Mexico, the last in 2011, when 93,420 showed up to watch Mexico win the 2011 Gold Cup final.
