Ed Azzam, the winningest basketball coach in City Section history and in his 38th season, talked with excitement on Tuesday night about his two sophomore guards, Jeremiah Turley and Jordan Brinson. Both came through in Westchester’s 77-72 overtime win over No. 5-ranked Long Beach Poly in the quarterfinals of the Redondo tournament.

Turley’s three-pointer with 6.8 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime. And Brinson contributed 24 points. Turley is a transfer from Warren. Brinson played on varsity last season as a freshman.

“I’m impressed,” Azzam said. “They’re not afraid. The guards are playing big and the defense is coming. They play hard and play with confidence.”

Luis Rodriguez had 19 points and Marquis Moore also contributed for the Comets. Zafir Williams had 26 points for Poly, which gave the Comets the opening they needed when Darryl Polk missed the front end of a one-and-one with 14.5 seconds left in regulation. That’s when Turley drilled his three-pointer.

“I’ve been working on it since I was 4,” Turley said of his shooting touch.
