Woman struck by L.A. County beach maintenance vehicle
An SUV driven by a Los Angeles County beach maintenance worker struck and injured a woman Wednesday morning at Venice Beach.
The 49-year-old woman, whose name was not available, was struck about 10:30 a.m. on the Via Marina Peninsula beach just north of the main channel of the Marina del Rey Harbor, officials said. She was taken to UCLA Medical Center in Westwood and listed in serious condition.
County officials said in a statement that the worker, “a veteran employee” of the county’s Department of Beaches and Harbors, had stopped to look at several large pieces of debris near the shoreline and arrange for their removal.
The woman was lying face-down in the sand. The driver did not see her and, as he turned away from the shore, he struck her, according to a county statement.
County lifeguards and Los Angeles City Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene. The woman was “alert and oriented” after she was struck.
Los Angeles police responded to the scene and interviewed the driver, who was later released. The county beach department “will continue to review the incident,” the statement said.
