A Whittier man died Thursday after he touched a live power line that had fallen in his backyard, authorities said.

The L.A. County coroner’s office identified the victim as 45-year-old Juan Nieves.

Nieves heard a loud boom about 3 a.m. and saw flashing lights in the backyard of his home in the 6400 block of Danby Avenue, officials with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department said.

When he went outside, he touched a power line that fell after a transformer blew, officials said. The man’s family called 911. Nieves died at the scene.

Neighbor Moises Duran told CBS Los Angeles that Nieves was a strong, hard-working man.

“It’s sad that this happened today,” Duran told the TV station.
