Deputies in armed standoff with man suspected of shooting woman
Sheriff’s deputies on Saturday remained in an armed standoff with a gunman hours after he allegedly shot the mother of his children, authorities said.
The standoff began shortly before 9 a.m. following a police pursuit of the suspect that ended near the intersection of Norwalk Boulevard and Carson Street in Hawaiian Gardens, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. There, the suspect has refused to get out of his white truck and surrender to authorities.
A Sheriff’s SWAT team has been dispatched to the scene and the area has been cordoned off.
Hours earlier, at about 12:30 a.m., the suspect shot the mother of his children in Eastvale, about four miles north of Corona, said Armando Munoz, a spokesman for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The man, whom police declined to idenfity, then took the shooting victim to a hospital where she was treated for her injuries and is expected to survive, Munoz said.
The couple had two children together who did not witness the shooting and are safe, Munoz said.
As the standoff continued, Carson Street was closed between Juan Avenue and Norwalk Boulevard, and Norwalk was closed between 216th and 223rd streets.
Sheriff’s deputies asked that local residents and motorists avoid the area until further notice.
