A man and woman were found dead with gunshot wounds inside the bedroom of a Santa Ana condominium on Wednesday. Homicide detectives are investigating the case as a possible murder-suicide.

Police were called to the 2100 block of East Wellington Avenue around 6 p.m. after being asked to make a welfare check by a concerned resident, Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

The officers gained access to the condo, where they found a 78-year-old woman and a 71-year-old man inside a bedroom with gunshot wounds, he said.

Fire personnel responded and pronounced both the man and woman dead at the scene.

Bertagna said detectives found the weapon at the scene and are investigating the case as a murder-suicide. Detectives believe the man shot the woman and then killed himself, Bertagna said.

“They believe this was an isolated incident,” he said.

The names of the man and woman are being withheld pending notification of family members by the coroner’s office, which Bertagna said would also be responsible for determining the time of death.

Bertagna said the couple was unmarried but had lived together for 25 years.
