The Laguna Beach High baseball team took on a pair of formidable opponents in recent summer action.

Wednesday at Beckman, a CIF Southern Section Division 3 semifinalist this year, Jeff Bruyntjens singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored once.

“We played OK,” Laguna Coach Mike Bair said of the scrimmage contest, during which score is not kept. “Pitching was decent, hitting was OK.”

Bair was pleased with his team’s effort July 15 at Sage Hill, the defending CIF-SS Divison 6 champion. Bruyntjens had two hits and Jack Loechner, Blake Burzell and Joe Sweet took turns on the mound and provided “solid pitching,” Bair said.

“We hit well and gave up no runs,” he said. “Solid game.”

The Breakers’ game Monday against Orange Lutheran was canceled, Bair said.

The Breakers are scheduled to take on Woodbridge, runner-up to the Division 3 title, at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Ryan Lemmon Stadium. It’s the first of their final four games of the summer season for the Breakers.

Laguna Beach concluded its summer season this past week, and went into its offseason with some momentum.

The Breakers, who competed in both the Godinez and Dana Hills summer leagues, capped their summer session by winning their final three games. The first win came at the expense of Orange Coast League rival Costa Mesa on July 13. They started the current week by defeating an Edison team that was runner-up to the 2016 CIF Southern Section Division 2AA title in March, and ended it with a Wednesday win over Irvine.

The Breakers went 11-7 overall.

“I saw huge improvement this summer, from beginning to end,” Laguna Coach Bret Fleming said. “Summer is about getting a group together to compete at the varsity level and I feel like we accomplished that.”

Fleming said that the Laguna program will host its annual alumni tournament at 8:30 a.m. July 30 at Dugger Gym.
