Clippers’ Spencer Hawes leaves game against Wizards with knee injury

Clippers reserve center Spencer Hawes suffered a bruised left knee in the first quarter and was unable to return to the game against the Washington Wizards on Friday night.

Hawes stumbled to the court with 8.3 seconds left in the first, and limped to the locker room with head athletic trainer Jasen Powell.

Hawes got X-rays that showed no ligament damage, the Clippers said.

Hawes said he had jumped for a rebound in a group and came down awkwardly.

“I initially came down on someone’s foot,” Hawes said. “I thought I just twisted my ankle, but I continued down and twisted my knee pretty good. The X-rays were good.”

Hawes said he hopes to get another examination when the Clippers travel to Milwaukee on Saturday to play the Bucks.

He didn’t say whether he was going to play, but Hawes didn’t sound like he could suit up yet.

“Initially when it goes that way, you fear the worst,” Hawes said. “But they did the X-rays for the ligaments and said that was good. That helps you out a little bit.”

After the game, the 7-foot Hawes walked gingerly.

“It’s not feeling great,” he said. “I knew right then [when I got hurt] that was going to be the end for a little bit. So hopefully we’ll figure out more tomorrow what’s going on and then go from there.”

Barnes frustrated

When Matt Barnes went to the Clippers bench with about two minutes left and his team not really ever in the game, his frustration became apparent when he kicked a cup of water.

The problem was that the water flew into the stands and sprayed some fans, which led to some verbal sparring.

One fan began trash-talking at Barnes, who in turn exchanged angry words with the fans.

“It’s just emotions,” Barnes said. “Sometimes you hold it in, and sometimes you don’t.”

Bullock, Douglas-Roberts getting close

Clippers Coach Doc Rivers said there is a chance that both Reggie Bullock and Chris Douglas-Roberts could be available to play Saturday night against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Bullock missed his fifth consecutive game because of a sprained right ankle, and Douglas-Roberts missed his 16th consecutive game with a strained right Achilles’.

Both Bullock and Douglas-Roberts practiced Thursday.

“I think they are very close,” Rivers said. “I wouldn’t be shocked to see them tomorrow. I’m not saying that, but I wouldn’t be shocked.”
