Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager to undergo hip surgery Tuesday

Corey Seager has another body part in need of surgery.

Already out for the 2018 season after ligament-replacement surgery on his right elbow, the two-time All-Star shortstop will have arthroscopic surgery on his left hip Tuesday in New York, the Dodgers announced.

In a release announcing the surgery, the Dodgers indicated Seager was expected to resume baseball activities in January.

Seager played the second half of 2017 with inflammation and bone chips in the elbow. He tore the ulnar collateral ligament in April and had the surgery soon after. The injury overshadowed a minor tweak to his hip that occurred a few days earlier and cost him a couple days. The Dodgers opted to clean up the issue while Seager was already rehabilitating.

In Seager’s absence, the Dodgers acquired four-time All-Star Manny Machado from Baltimore as a replacement. Machado can play third base and shortstop, but has indicated he would prefer to be a shortstop as he enters free agency after this season.

The Dodgers are expected to pursue Machado this offseason. There would still be a logjam with Seager at shortstop and Justin Turner at third base, but the team could theoretically move Cody Bellinger to the outfield and ask Turner to learn first base.

Over the weekend, a young Dodgers fan asked manager Dave Roberts how the team might handle a roster that includes Machado and Seager.

“Manny’s going to have a decision to make on who he wants to sign with next year,” Roberts said. “Corey just had surgery on his elbow. We expect him to be ready to go next year and play shortstop. Manny has to make his own decision. But we’ll have Corey back in a Dodgers uniform next year.”
