Baseball: San Fernando edges Kennedy, 2-1, in eight innings

Sophomore pitcher Steven Villagran allowed two hits in seven innings and helped San Fernando defeat Granada Hills Kennedy, 2-1, in eight innings on Tuesday to take over sole possession of first place in the Valley Mission League.

The Tigers (8-0) won the game when the Golden Cougars (8-1) couldn’t execute a double play with the bases loaded in the eighth. Louie Vargas had three hits for San Fernando. Sophomore Phillip Alfaro of Kennedy held the Tigers to one run for 7 1/3 innings. The two teams meet again on Thursday at Kennedy.

Banning 5, Carson 0: Ivan Martinez threw the shutout and freshman Andy Vega had three hits to lead the Pilots into first place in the Marine League. Michael Ramirez had a two-run double. Banning is 7-0 in league and Carson 6-1.

Chaminade 4, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 0: Anthony Acosta threw 5 1/3 shutout innings and Blake Mann hit a three-run home run to help the Eagles stay in the Mission League title hunt. Sophomore Sean Sullivan came through in a relief role, striking out four. Tommy Costello had two hits.

Loyola 6, St. Francis 2: The Cubs stayed a game ahead in first place in the Mission League. Daniel Caruso struck out nine in six innings. Joe Fortin had two hits and Christian Gambale had two RBIs.

Burroughs 13, Crescenta Valley 8: The Indians pulled into a first-place tie in the Pacific League. Jonathan Marx had a double, single and four RBIs.

St. John Bosco 2, Serivte 0: The Braves got their first Trinity League win. Carlos Lomelli earned the win and Johnny Kuhn picked up the save with two strikeouts.

Santa Ana Mater Dei 3, Santa Margarita 0: Michael Thomas threw a four-hit shutout in the Trinity League game. CJ Rodriguez had two RBIs.

Aliso Niguel 3, Dana Hills 2: Zak Nocon threw the complete game for Aliso Niguel.

Corona del Mar 5, Woodbridge 3: Robby Hurst had a three-run double for Corona del Mar.

Beckman 7, Irvine University 4: Austin Schell went three for four with three RBIs.

Great Oak 4, Temecula Valley 0: Zack Noll struck out 11 and allowed one hit in six innings.

Culver City 9, Santa Monica 4: Eli Saucedo gave up one run in six innings to help Culver City take over first place in the Ocean League.

Sierra Canyon 10, Viewpoint 5: Seth Stone struck out seven and picked up his 20th pitching victory in high school. Stone, Jake Edwards, Billy Edwards and Beau Zacharia each had two hits.

Bishop Amat 4, La Salle 1: The Lancers won their eighth consecutive game. Jayson Gonzalez had two hits and Diego Barrera struck out five in six innings.

Village Christian 5, Valley Christian 0: The Crusaders won the Olympic League game. Gordon Ingerbritson threw the shutout.

Maranatha 6, Whittier Christian 4: Max Blessinger had three hits.
