Baseball: Saugus’ Andrius Polikaitis joins Lithuanian national team
Andrius Polikaitis, one of the top hitters for Saugus’ Division 1 semifinalist baseball team this past season, has joined the Lithuanian national baseball team and will compete in the European B-Level Baseball Championships next month in Austria. They will compete against national teams from Sweden, Belarus, Israel and Poland, among others.
He recently obtained his Lithuanian citizenship to join the team. His maternal and paternal grandparents were born in Lithuania.
He was discovered by the Lithuanian baseball coach via a Facebook message. His father began the process in February obtaining citizenship to join the team.
Polikaitis has maintained deep cultural roots with Lithuania, attending a Lithuanian school on Saturdays and is fluent in the language.
Polikaitis hit .381 and played multiple positions this past season as a senior. He will be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the fall.
