San Clemente players go by the motto, “One town, one team.” So understand the Tritons’ excitement playing to win their first Southern Section football championship on Friday at home against Trabuco Hills in the Southwest Division final.

“Being in the finals for our city is a huge thing,” Quarterback Sam Darnold said. “One team, one town. It’s an amazing opportunity.”

The game is expected to fill San Clemente’s stadium that seats 8,000. What will be special about the game is that the two teams competing are filled with players that have been together for years through elementary and middle school.

They’re home-grown talent playing for themselves, their classmates and their best friends. That should make the game special itself.

Just look at the attitude of Darnold, who’s committed to USC. He wants to keep playing football for as long as possible this season, but he’s looking forward to joining the basketball team, too.

“I want to stay with my buddies for as long as I can in high school because it only comes around once,” he said.
