Angels beat Mariners, 4-2, for first four-game road sweep since 2004

SEATTLE -- Kendrys Morales ended a lengthy power drought, and C.J. Wilson threw six superb innings Sunday at Safeco Field to lead the Angels to a 4-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners and their first sweep of a four-game road series since Aug. 6-9, 2004, at Kansas City.

Morales drove in a run with a single in the first, hit a solo home run in the fourth, and doubled and scored in the ninth, as the Angels extended their season-high winning streak to six games and improved to 24-25. Mark Trumbo added a solo homer in the seventh.

Wilson (6-4) gave up one run and two hits, striking out five and walking two, before leaving because of a blister. Ernesto Frieri threw a scoreless eighth inning, and Scott Downs threw a scoreless ninth for his fifth save.

Morales, who returned this season after missing a year and a half because of a broken left ankle, entered with a .276 average and .373 slugging percentage. He had three homers, four doubles and 12 runs batted in for the season and one extra-base hit and four RBIs in his previous 19 games.

But with two outs and Mike Trout, who singled and stole second base, aboard in the first inning, Morales stroked an opposite-field single to left-center field to give the Angels a 1-0 lead.

Morales then led off the fourth inning by driving an 0-2 pitch from Seattle starter Hector Noesi over the wall in center field for his fourth homer of the season and a 2-0 lead.

The Mariners cut it to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, when Jesus Montero doubled to left-center field with two outs, the first hit off Wilson, and Justin Smoak added an RBI single to right.

But Trumbo led off the seventh by crushing an 0-2 pitch from Noesi into the upper deck in left field for his seventh homer of the season and a 3-1 Angels lead.

Wilson, who nicked Smoak’s chopper up the middle with his pitching hand in the second inning, departed after six innings because of a blister on a finger of his left hand. Wilson has given up only three hits in 14 innings of his last two starts.

On came reliever Jordan Walden, whose string of 9 1/3 scoreless innings ended when Montero walked, took second on a wild pitch, third on a ground-ball out and scored on another Walden pitch to cut the Angels’ lead to 3-2.

But the Angels added a huge insurance run in the ninth when Morales led off with a double into the right-field corner, took third on Trumbo’s fly ball to deep center and scored on Howie Kendrick’s sacrifice fly to the wall in right.
