Old Southern California high school foes share college experience
To go from bitter high school rivals to college roommates doesn’t happen very often, but it’s taking place at the University of Pennsylvania, where freshmen football players Dylan Muscat (Santa Monica High) and Cameron Countryman (Beverly Hills) have suddenly found themselves sharing a microwave, television and refrigerator in their dorm room.
“We’re trying to get a bean bag,” Muscat said of his new friendship with Countryman.
For four years of high school they went head to head on opposite sides of the ball. Muscat was a defensive back, Countryman a receiver. Muscat wore the blue and gold colors of Santa Monica. Countryman wore the orange, black and white colors of Beverly Hills. Each was a three-time all-league selection.
Then, in August, they ended up being paired together as roommates at Penn while trying to help each other gain playing time as freshmen.
“We just push each other on the field,” Muscat said. “We help each other with homework.”
Countryman is in the Wharton School of Business. Muscat is in the College of Arts and Science. As heated as the Santa Monica-Beverly Hills rivalry is, these two natives of Southern California like each other.
“You never know what’s going to happen in life,” Muscat said. “Don’t burn bridges. If me and Cameron actually hated each other, we’d never be doing what we’re doing now. We’re going through college together. He might end up being my best man.”
They begin their college football careers Saturday against Lafayette.
Their rivalry, though, could resurface when Santa Monica and Beverly Hills play Oct. 12. The player whose team loses might have to vacuum for a month.
Guards commit
Chance Murray, the standout guard for Los Angeles Price, has committed to Arizona State. All-City guard Kris Yanku of Woodland Hills Taft has committed to Northern Arizona.
Canyon passing record
Junior quarterback Cade Apsay of Canyon Country Canyon set a school record for passing last week with 405 yards against Palmdale Knight.
In three games, he has thrown for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns. Not bad for someone who played junior varsity all of last season.
