Orioles’ Manny Machado injures knee
Third baseman Manny Machado was taken off the field on a stretcher after injuring his left leg running out an infield single in the Baltimore Orioles’ 5-4 loss at Tampa Bay on Monday.
Machado’s leg buckled when he reached the first base bag in the seventh inning.
Machado was in obvious pain while being treated on the infield dirt near first by team trainers and stadium medical officials.
The Rays completed a four-game sweep of the Orioles when Wil Myers tied the score with a two-run single on a jarring play in the seventh inning and pinch-hitter James Loney hit a home run in the ninth.
The Rays moved a game ahead of idle Cleveland for the top American League wild-card spot. Baltimore fell five games back of the Indians with six games to go for each team.
Twins shut down Joe Mauer
The Minnesota Twins are shutting down All-Star catcher Joe Mauer for the rest of the season while he recovers from a concussion.
The Twins said the former AL most valuable player is making progress but they don’t want to take unnecessary risks since they are out of contention in the AL Central.
Mauer hasn’t played since Aug. 19. He was injured while catching when he took a foul tip off of his mask.
Yankees’ CC Sabathia is done for season
CC Sabathia will not pitch again for the New York Yankees this season because of a strained left hamstring.
The Yankees said that Sabathia was injured Friday against the San Francisco Giants. They said the left-hander has a Grade 2 strain and would need about eight weeks to recover.
Sabathia will finish with a 14-13 record and 4.78 earned-run average in 32 starts.
