Players’ union, Stow family part of unsecured creditors’ panel in Dodgers’ bankruptcy case

The Major League Baseball Players’ Assn., the family of Bryan Stow and KABC radio are among five parties appointed Wednesday to represent the interests of unsecured creditors in the Dodgers’ bankruptcy case.

The committee, selected by a United States trustee, acts to ensure the interests of all unsecured creditors in the case. The Dodgers, as the debtor, are responsible for covering the legal bills incurred by the committee.

The Dodgers’ bankruptcy petition listed the team’s top 40 unsecured creditors, in accordance with bankruptcy law. The majority of those 40 are current and former players, led by Manny Ramirez, to whom the Dodgers owe $21 million. Of the 13 unsecured creditors owed more than $1 million, all involve payment to current or former players.

The Dodgers do not currently owe Stow any money, but his family has sued the Dodgers over the stadium parking lot beating in which he was critically injured.

The Dodgers owe KABC $273,321, according to the filing. The other two parties appointed to the committee represent vendors.

The fan who returned the ball from Derek Jeter’s 3,000th hit will get his own baseball card. Topps said it will produce a trading card featuring Christian Lopez that will be included in sets this year. Lopez, a recent college graduate with outstanding student loans, will get financial help too. Memorabilia dealer Brandon Steiner and sporting goods CEO Mitch Modell said they will make sure Lopez gets at least $50,000 toward his loan balance of $150,000.…

The All-Star game drew a record-low rating for the second year in a row. The National League’s 5-1 victory Tuesday earned a 6.9 rating and 12 share on Fox. That’s down 8% from the 7.5/13 in 2010. Before last year, the previous low was an 8.1/14 in 2005. … The St. Louis Cardinals solidified their rotation for the future, signing left-hander Jaime Garcia to a four-year contract extension with club options for a fifth and sixth season. Garcia, 25, leads the team in victories and is 9-3 with a 3.23 earned-run average. He was due to be eligible for arbitration for the first time after the season…. The Cleveland Indians put struggling starter Mitch Talbot on the 15-day disabled list because he has a lower back strain. Talbot is 2-6 with a 6.33 ERA in 11 starts.
