It will be a hard sell with that resume

Let’s just say that job seekers probably aren’t going to pick up any how-to tips from Stephon Marbury.

The former NBA All-Star wasn’t sharp last spring with the Boston Celtics, averaging 3.7 points and shooting 30% in the playoffs. Marbury, 32, became a free agent this summer and none of the 30 NBA teams seem interested.

It didn’t help that Marbury went on the Internet with a 24-hour video feed, saying he’d seen Jesus in the shower and bursting into tears while playing the song “Lean on Me.”

TMZ.com posted a video of Marbury saying, “I smoke marijuana . . . yep . . . I’m not under contract . . . I smoke weed occasionally . . . I’m not driving . . . I’m following the rules.”

Dallas Maverick Josh Howard admitted last year that he sometimes smoked marijuana.

“Howard is still a borderline All-Star caliber player who was under contract when he decided to be honest,” wrote Austin Burton of Dime Magazine. “Steph is an aging player with a bad reputation already who doesn’t have a job right now.”

Trivia time

Kobe Bryant turns 31 on Sunday. Who won more NBA titles after their 31st birthday, Bill Russell or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar?

Quarterbacks will travel

Brett Favre (Minnesota) and Michael Vick (Philadelphia) are already shaking up the odds on the 2010 Super Bowl, according to Bodoglife.com. The gambling site lists these teams as Super Bowl favorites: New England at 7-2, Pittsburgh at 9-1, San Diego and Philadelphia at 10-1, the New York Giants at 11-1, and Minnesota and Indianapolis at 12-1.

Feed your team

New Mexico State’s athletic director cut $1.5 million from his budget, so his football staff asked fans to donate snacks for the players after practice.

“We had a guy bring in a bunch of watermelons. That was great,” linebacker Jamar Cotton told the Associated Press. “The team was excited. It was like little kids getting lollipops.”

Trivia answer

Abdul-Jabbar, with five. Russell had four.

And finally

From David Letterman’s Top Ten list of Tiger Woods’ excuses for blowing the PGA Championship:

“Spent the previous night with John Daly . . .

“Would you practice if you had a hot Swedish wife? . . .

“Instead of winning majors, focused on making every recipe in Julia Child’s cookbook.”
