Guillermo Mota suspended 100 games regarding MLB drug policy

Former Dodgers pitcher Guillermo Mota will be suspended 100 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, Major League Baseball said Monday.

Mota, 38, has spent 14 seasons in the major leagues and is currently a reliever for the San Francisco Giants. He is 0-1 with a 5.06 earned-run average, nine strikeouts and four walks in nine appearances (10 2/3 innings) this season.

“The Giants are disappointed to learn of Guillermo Mota’s suspension,” the team said in a statement.

According to Commissioner Bud Selig’s office, Mota tested positive for clenbuterol. A grievance challenging the suspension was filed by the Major League Baseball Players Assn. and will be heard by an arbitrator.

Mota also received a 50-game suspension as a member of the New York Mets after the 2006 season for allegedly violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. Only Manny Ramirez -- another former Dodger -- and Eliezer Alfonzo also have tested positive twice. A third positive test would result in a lifetime ban.

Mota pitched for the Dodgers from 2002 through the midway point of the 2004 season. He had a 4.15 ERA in 60.2 innings with 31 strikeouts in 2002; a 1.97 ERA in 105 innings with 99 strikeouts in 2003; and a 2.14 ERA in 63 innings with 52 strikeouts in 2004 before being traded to the Florida Marlins.

In 2009, Mota returned to the Dodgers and pitched 65 innings with a 3.44 ERA and 39 strikeouts. He has also played for the Montreal Expos, Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers.
