Top-seeded duo lose opening match at World Series of Beach Volleyball

Wednesday marked the start of pool play at the 2015 ASICS World Series of Beach Volleyball in Long Beach, with women’s teams playing twice, and men’s teams playing once.

Top-seeded men’s duo Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb lost their opening match in three sets to Saymon Barbosa and Gustavo Carvalhaes, a Brazilian duo who advanced to the main draw through the qualifying rounds.

The 24th-seeded team of Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena defeated ninth-seeded Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk of Canada, and 18th-seeded Tri Bourne and John Hyden beat Chile’s Esteban Grimalt and Marco Grimalt.

Among the women, top-seeded Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas easily won their first two matches, as did eighth-seeded Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross.

The top 24 men’s and top 24 women’s teams from Thursday’s play will advance to the elimination rounds Friday.
