Racing! A look at the horses you wish you could have seen race each other

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa, welcome back to our horse racing newsletter and let’s ponder some races that might have been.

A few days ago, when I screwed up and said a horse was from itself and then floated the idea of thoroughbreds being able to reproduce like amoebas — OK, TMI. Anyway, I asked you loyal readers what match race you would like to see if you could blur the lines of time.

First, I used the phrase match race as more of an entry point as to which two horses you would like to see race against each other. Sort of like two years ago when Arrogate claimed the crown from California Chrome in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Yes, there would be other horses but few would care.

Well, you have spoken and the one name that kept coming up again and again was Secretariat and a lot of you wanted to see him run against Spectacular Bid. Personally, and my horse knowledge sort of starts in the 1970s, I think Secretariat was the greatest horse ever. And there are definable reasons for it, he was an anatomical freak.

Big Red had a heart that was estimated to be at least twice as large as a normal equine heart. It allowed him to process oxygen at an incredible rate and gave him unbelievable endurance. I actually thought the same of Arrogate until Del Mar made him mortal.

The second biggest name is Zenyatta, and who can argue with that? American Pharoah also got some love as a horse that you wished you could see more of.

Anyway, these are the races you would like to see. If the same matchup was suggested by more than one person, I used the name of the first person to select it.

Scott Hemphill wants to see: Secretariat vs. Spectacular Bid.

Russ Charvonia: Secretariat vs. Seattle Slew.

John O’Sullivan: Secretariat vs. Forego (at age 5).

Jim Lewis: Secretariat vs. Man O’ War.

Jeff Amster: Secretariat vs. Dr. Fager.

Mark Gordon: Secretariat vs. John Henry (winner to face American Pharoah.)

Larry LeGros: Zenyatta vs. Rachel Alexander and American Pharoah vs. Arrogate.

Fred Hoyt: Zenyatta vs. Blame. (The rematch.)

Paul MacNeill: Zenyatta vs. American Pharoah.

Steve Rittenour: Zenyatta vs. Person Ensign.

Andy Mosley: Dr. Fager vs. Man O’ War at a mile.

Suzanne Hurst: American Pharoah vs. Beholder or Songbird vs. Arrogate.

Curtis Wright: Ruffian vs. Bayakoa or Dr. Fager vs. Seattle Slew.

Steve Manner: American Pharoah vs. I’ll Have Another.

Ted Barber: Ack Ack vs. Cougar II.

Los Alamitos thoroughbred review

Vision, yet another talented 2-year-old for trainer Bob Baffert looked beaten several times during the sixth race, but a few left-handed taps by jockey Mike Smith got him flying, ducking to the inside and winning the 5½-furlong maiden special weight by 1¼ lengths. The colt was purchased by the China Horse Club for half-a-mil. Shanghai Billy was second and Jonny Be Bueno was third. Vision paid $5.40, $3.40 and $2.80.

Los Alamitos thoroughbred preview

The most interesting race on Friday’s card might be the fourth, which is 5½ furlongs for 2-year-old fillies and a purse of $40,000. The favorite, at 5-2, is Mischievous Song for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and he gets Smith as the jockey. If you read between the lines, Smith likes to ride Baffert’s best, but he chose to switch to the Hollendorfer filly. Baffert’s Hottalbamba is at 5-1. Doug O’Neill has the 3-1 second choice, Travieza, with Kyle Frey up.

The seventh race carries a $45,000 purse for fillies and mares 3 and up. It’s an allowance optional claiming race over 5½ furlongs. The rest of the card are claiming races.

Mark Ratzky’s LRC play of the day

FOURTH RACE: No. 3 Mischievous Song (5-2)

Got lots of tote support when making her debut six weeks ago at Santa Anita, battled it out up front but was unable to match a filly dropping from the straight maiden ranks. Claimed by Hollendorfer, who brings her back sans tag and hits at 21% with his fresh purchases. Mike Smith the cherry on top of this cake.

RESULTS: Vision made a late run to win as the favorite, paying $5.40 to win.

Mark Ratzky worked for 22 years for the Daily Racing Form and has been the simulcast announcer/publicity at Los Alamitos for the last 19 years.

Los Alamitos QH preview

Yesterday, I asked you subscribers to come up with some kind of tag we can call Los Alamitos. I didn’t think they had one and you guys came up with some good ones, although I think we could use some more suggestions.

Orlando Gutierrez, Los Al’s media and marketing honcho answered my challenge with names I might have heard of but forgotten. So, we’re going to turn over the rest of this item to Orlando, pretty much in his own words.

“Los Alamitos’ motto for many years has been ‘Where Your Best Day of Racing May Be At Night!’ It’s a little long, but it told a story. The track also enjoys coining itself as the place of ‘Fast Horses, Friendly People.’

“For the next three weeks in December, Los Alamitos will host day-night doubleheaders on Friday through Sunday nights. It will have thoroughbreds in the daytime and quarter horses and lower claiming thoroughbreds at night.

“On Friday evening, Los Alamitos will host its final major set of trials when 34 runners compete in the qualifying races for the Grade 2, $175,300 Southern California Derby. Katella Deli and Kissed By An Eagle, the second and third place finishers in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby, are now among the big names racing in the 400-yard trials, which will see the 10 fastest runners returning for the final on Friday, Dec. 15.

“As has been the case recently, trainer Jaime Gomez will have one of the big names on trial night when he sends out Katella Deli in the second of five heats. In the Super Derby, Gomez saddled the 1-2 finishers with Chazaq winning the derby and Katella Deli coming in second. Katella Deli is named after the famous restaurant/bakery located near the track on Katella Avenue in Los Alamitos. Prior to the running of a major Grade 1 race last year, the restaurant sent the horse and Gomez a tray full of cookies and goodies. Katella Deli will look to earn a spot in the Southern California Derby and maybe a few more sweets on Friday night.”

Thanks, Orlando.

Ed Burgart L.A. play of the day

FIFTH RACE: No. 7 Mr Apollitical Dash (4-1)

He was bumped back after breaking slow when eighth as the 4-5 favorite in last Los Alamitos Super Derby trial outing. In his prior stakes outing, he was a strong third vs. That Rico, who won last summer’s Golden State Derby. Trainer Juan Aleman now applies the flipping halter to Mr Apollitical Dash, who figures to get a clean trip from the far outside post where he has scored two of his three career victories.
