Hunter Pence goes on DL because of sore wrist

San Franciso Giants right fielder Hunter Pence was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore left wrist.

He hasn’t played since injuring the wrist June 2 on a diving catch at AT&T Park against Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen, so Friday’s roster move is retroactive to June 3. Pence began the season on the DL because of a fractured left forearm he injured during spring training then returned May 16 to play 18 games.

The St. Louis Cardinals placed right-hander Lance Lynn on the 15-day DL because of a forearm strain and will recall left-hander Tyler Lyons to start Saturday against the Kansas City Royals. General Manager John Mozeliak was optimistic that Lynn would be ready to rejoin the rotation in 15 days.

The Washington Nationals activated newly acquired reliever David Carpenter after placing right-hander Aaron Barrett on the 15-day DL with a strained right biceps. Carpenter was acquired from the New York Yankees on Thursday for minor league infielder Tony Renda.

A Massachusetts woman who was seriously hurt when a broken bat flew into the stands at Fenway Park last week has been released from a hospital.

Officials at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston said Tonya Carpenter was discharged and transferred to a rehabilitation center. Doctors described Carpenter’s recovery as “excellent” and said she’s getting stronger every day.

Torii Hunter has appealed a two-game suspension that he believes is a “little harsh” for his equipment-throwing outburst after being ejected earlier this week. Major League Baseball also fined the Minnesota Twins outfielder an undisclosed amount for his tantrum during Wednesday’s home game against Kansas City.

Hunter was in the Twins lineup Friday night, batting second and playing right field, for the series opener at Texas.
