Clippers continue to experiment at small forward
The Clippers’ positions and rotations appear to be set, except at small forward.
So far in the team’s three exhibition games, Clippers Coach Doc Rivers has started three different players at that position -- Matt Barnes, Reggie Bullock and Chris Douglas-Roberts -- and no one seems to stand out.
In the first preseason game against the Golden State Warriors, Barnes started. He finished with four points, two rebounds and five fouls in nearly 21 minutes. Sigh.
Bullock started the next game against the Portland Trail Blazers. He finished with six points and three rebounds in about 19 minutes. Yawn.
Then Rivers tried Douglas-Roberts against the Utah Jazz. His performance was equally unimpressive: four points, four rebounds and two turnovers in 30½ minutes.
Rivers also intends to give Australian Joe Ingles a shot to evaluate how he plays at the NBA level. Ingles spent last season with Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel.
Until one of those players show that he can play well in Rivers’ system, add small forward to the list of things the Clippers need to improve heading into the season, chief among them defense.
