Jack Del Rio confirms USC interview but is focused on Broncos for now
Jack Del Rio confirmed he was interviewed for the USC head coaching vacancy during the Denver Broncos’ bye week earlier this month, but said that he’s focused on the task at hand.
The former All-American linebacker for the Trojans is interim head coach of the Broncos while John Fox recovers from heart surgery, and Sunday night his team knocked off the previously undefeated Kansas City Chiefs, 27-17. Del Rio confirmed that USC Athletic Director Pat Haden did indeed interview him, news first reported by Fox’s Jay Glazer.
“I can honestly say that that was handled in the proper way,” said Del Rio, who doubles as Denver’s defensive coordinator. “They contacted the Broncos, got permission, and we did it in a manner where they came out here and visited with me during our bye week so it wouldn’t disrupt anything. So that’s what took place.
“Now, my job continues. My focus is here. It’s an honor to obviously be even in consideration for something like that, but I also feel very honored to be here and be the defensive coordinator and interim head coach for the Denver Broncos.
“So all of my attention, all of my efforts and energy, are going into the Denver Broncos right now. Down the road, who knows where that goes? But that’s certainly not anything that needs to be discussed other than ‘Is it true?’ Yes, it did occur. But that’s really it. I’m acknowledging it absolutely did, it was handled in a professional manner and now my attention is completely with helping this football team be prepared.”
