Unbeaten welterweight boxing champion Keith Thurman has sustained minor injuries in a car accident, forcing the postponement of his March 12 title defense against former champion Shawn Porter.

Promoter Lou DiBella announced that the bout, which was to be televised by CBS from the Mohegan Sun resort in Connecticut, will be rescheduled in the near future.

“While it’s unfortunate that we must temporarily postpone this marquee matchup, a main event of the magnitude of Thurman versus Porter requires both fighters be healthy and at their best,” DiBella said in a statement Monday.

“Keith is anxious to resume training as soon he is able, and both he and Shawn are looking forward to a new fight date.”

The statement added, “According to his doctors, Thurman’s injuries are not considered serious and he is expected to be cleared to resume training in the coming weeks.”

Should the remainder of the card -- including a bout featuring Southland featherweight Abner Mares -- proceed, it will be shown on Showtime, officials said.
