Penn State has spent $27 million in Jerry Sandusky-related costs

Penn State’s bill for legal fees, consultants and other costs associated with the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal stands at more than $27 million, including $13 million for the internal investigation by former FBI Director Louis Freeh.

Sandusky, a former assistant football coach, is serving a 30- to 60-year prison term for 45 counts of child sexual abuse involving 10 boys.

The total doesn’t include the first of five $12-million annual installments to begin covering the $60-million fine handed down by the NCAA as part of its sanctions.

Penn State also paid $7.5 million for university legal services or defense and about $4 million for legal defense fees covering three ex-school administrators facing criminal charges related to the scandal. The rest of the $27 million comes from miscellaneous smaller fees.

Penn State has said it won’t dip into tuition dollars, state appropriations or donations to pay for any expenses related to the Sandusky case.
