Quentin Jammer says he can play cornerback or safety for Broncos

A day after signing with Denver, cornerback Quentin Jammer was on the practice field Thursday for the Broncos, getting used to playing for a team that was a division rival for so long.

“You look at this team and what they did last year and what [quarterback] Peyton Manning brings to this football team,” said Jammer, who spent his first 11 seasons in San Diego. “I get to play with a guy like [cornerback] Champ Bailey. Hands down, if you look across the league, what better place to go than Denver to have a chance to play for a championship?”

Jammer has made 157 starts since 2003, the most by any NFL cornerback during that span. He said he considered re-signing with the Chargers and joining the Washington Redskins, but he visited Denver and never left. The Broncos landed him after missing out on Charles Woodson, who returned to the Oakland Raiders (the team that drafted him) last week.

Jammer said he can play wherever he’s needed in Denver’s secondary.

“I came in to just help this football team win,” he said. “I always considered myself a football player, not really put a label on myself as a corner or a safety. This is the game of football, and I feel like I can be plugged in anywhere on the defense and play — other than the big hosses up front. Any of the skill positions in the back end I can be plugged in and play. I wanted to come in and help this football team as much as I can.”

Jammer had a pick-six against Manning last season, and the quarterback is happy to have him with the Broncos now.

“He’s seen it all,” Manning said. “I know Coach [John] Fox and Coach [defensive coordinator Jack] Del Rio are glad to have him because of the versatility that he brings. Whether he is playing corner, possibly playing some safety, he’s a guy they can put in in the dime package and let him cover an athletic tight end like a [New England tight end Aaron] Hernandez or a [Broncos tight end Jacob] Tamme. So, we are glad to have him and I know he’s excited to be here.”
