In one of the worst routs in college basketball history involving a Division I school, Southern defeated Champion Baptist College, 116-12, on Monday at Baton Rouge, La.

Champion Baptist, a member of the Assn. of Christian College Athletics, didn’t score its first point until nearly 15 minutes into the first half.

It was an embarrassment from the start, as Southern’s 44-0 start broke the record for the longest scoring run to start a game in Division I basketball history. It was also only the fifth time a game involving a Division I team was decided by 100 or more points. The record is 117 points, set when Long Island defeated Medgar Evers, 179-62, in 1992.

Southern won the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament last season to qualify for the NCAA tournament, but the team is only 4-9 this season after Monday’s victory.

Champion Baptist made only three of 44 shots it attempted and was out-rebounded 71-21.

“Defensively I felt like we played aggressive, we played hard and that’s a pretty good showing for us against a D-I school,” Champion Baptist Coach Eric Capaci told the Baton Rouge Advocate. “Offensively, we just did not show up. We missed our free throws, and missed a lot of easy layups. Southern is big and tall, but we still should have dropped some more buckets.”

Champion Baptist is a private school in Hot Springs, Ark., with a total full-time enrollment of 250 students.
