Baseball: Gahr pulls out 2-1 win over Mater Dei in eight innings

Cerritos Gahr (4-0) received a tremendous pitching performance on Wednesday from senior George Castillo, who had a no-hitter through seven innings against Mater Dei in a scoreless game. He dueled with Charlie Vorsheck, who threw six shutout innings for Mater Dei.

The Monarchs got a pinch-hit home run from Josh Blank in the eighth, but Gahr rallied to pull out a 2-1 victory on a squeeze bunt by Jorge Rivas. Castillo struck out 11.

Harvard-Westlake (5-0) won the Easton tournament championship with a 6-3 win over West Ranch. Ezra Steinberg went five for five and Cameron Deere added three hits.

Noah Davis allowed two hits over five innings and freshman Hagen Danner came in to strike out three over the final two innings to pick up the save and lead Huntington Beach past Orange Lutheran, 2-1.

Esperanza (4-0) remained unbeaten with a 7-4 win over Palm Desert. Harrison Pyatt struck out seven and walked one and Jacob White had two hits for the Aztecs.

Tyler Clark of Mission Viejo hit two home runs and finished with five RBIs in Mission Viejo’s 21-4 win over Katella.

In a 21-8 win over Rialto, Chino Hills (5-0) received seven RBIs from Justin Bardwell.

Parker Joe Robinson hit another home run for JSerra in a 9-3 victory over Capistrano Valley. Jake Pries added two hits.

In the Blue Division championship game of the Southern California Invitational, Malibu rallied for four runs in the seventh to defeat Sierra Canyon, 5-4. Nick Anthony had the game-winning two-run double.

Royal (5-0) won the other division championship with a 7-1 win over Canyon Country Canyon. Kurt Thompson had two hits, two RBIs and was the winning pitcher and tournament MVP. Brandon Grimes had two hits and three RBIs.

Brian Gadsby threw a three-hitter with seven strikeouts in Crescenta Valley’s 2-1 victory over Fullerton. Michael Russo had a double and single.

John Schultz allowed two hits in Granada Hills’ 4-1 win over North Hollywood. Sylmar defeated Eastside, 15-5. Carlos Telles had three runs and scored five runs. Jose Holguin had four RBIs.

Gilbert Hernandez struck out seven and allowed two hits in Kennedy’s 1-0 win over Roosevelt. Chris Sandberg had the game-winning RBI for the Golden Cougars (4-1).

Ben Kaser struck out nine in Cleveland’s 3-2 in over Hoover.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Palmdale, 17-0.

Riverside North defeated Fontana, 4-1. Andrew Quintero allowed five hits and struck out five.

Arleta defeated Campbell Hall, 13-8, scoring nine runs in the top of the seventh. Eddie Ramirez had four RBIs.

Cathedral defeated Corona del Mar, 10-3. Coy Leong went four for four and Daniel Casillas added three hits and two RBIs.

Kevin Stein had three hits and four RBIs in Carpinteria’s 7-0 win over Dunn.
