Soccer: Loyola wins over Servite in semifinal on penalty kicks

Loyola advanced to Saturday’s Southern Section Division I boys’ soccer championship game with a dramatic victory over Servite on penalty kicks.

After regulation and overtime ended in a 1-1 tie, Loyola survived a nail-biting penalty kicks battle, 10-9.

Each team was perfect on its penalty kicks until Loyola goalie Carl Rubschlager blocked a final penalty kick attempt by Servite for the victory. Also advancing to the final was San Clemente, which defeated Palos Verdes on penalty kicks.

In Division 4, top-seeded L.A. Cathedral defeated Lakeside, 4-1. Axel Mendez scored three goals.

In girls Division 1, Santa Margarita defeated Harvard-Westlake on penalty kicks in one semifinal.
