Attorney Says Young Talking to Buccaneers

An attorney for quarterback Steve Young said he has begun contract discussions with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after receiving the written permission of the United States Football League.

Leigh Steinberg, who negotiated Young’s $40-million USFL contract in 1984, said he received a letter from USFL Commissioner Harry Usher allowing the quarterback to “talk to and negotiate with an NFL club.”

The USFL, however, is not saying that Young is no longer under contract. “They are maintaining that Steve is still under contract with the Los Angeles Express,” Steinberg said. “He can negotiate, but he cannot sign without their permission.”
