Track and Field Roundup : Texas A&M; Freshman Wins Shotput at 71-9 3/4

Texas A&M; freshman Randy Barnes made the second-best shotput in collegiate history and the best in the world this year in the Baylor Invitational track and field meet at Waco, Tex.

Barnes won the event Friday night at 71-9 3/4. This broke the school record of 71-5 1/2 set by former world record-holder Randy Matson in 1967. The collegiate record is 71-11, set in 1984 by John Brenner of UCLA. The world record is 74-2 1/2, set last year by Ulf Timmermann of East Germany.

Barnes also won the discus at 199-9, a meet record by three feet and 14 feet better than his previous personal best.

At San Jose, Greg Tafralis went over 70 feet for the first time in his career to win the shotput at 70-4 1/2 in the Bruce Jenner meet.

Other winners included Finland’s Juha Tiainen, the Olympic hammer throw champion, with a toss of 248-3, and America’s Art Burns in the discus, at 224-2.

At Lawrence, Kan., Olympic pole vaulter Doug Lytle set a meet record of 18-9 3/4 in the Kansas Relays.
