Agent Says Toth, Sockers Have Agreed to Contract

The agent for the Sockers’ Zoltan Toth said Toth and the team have reached an agreement that will keep the MISL’s leading goalkeeper last season in San Diego for two more seasons.

The Sockers have sent a copy of the contract to Toth, who will sign when he receives it, said his agent, Scott Simpson.

A story in Friday’s editions misidentified the college attended by Kim Ruddins, a member of the U.S. Olympic women’s volleyball team. Ruddins attended Southern California.

Also, a source close to the Sockers confirmed that the team has come to terms with defender Gary Etherington, who played with the Minnesota Strikers last season. The Strikers folded in June.

VOLLEYBALL

Four former San Diego State players have made the final cut for the U.S. Olympic team. Coach Terry Liskevych selected Angela Rock, Laurel Kessel, Liane Soto and Kim Ruddins for the squad. Ruddins is the only representative from the 1984 Olympic silver medal team.

BASEBALL

The San Diego Stars defeated China, 4-3, in the championship game of the International Boys’ Friendship Tournament in Beijing, China. The 12-year-old all-star team went undefeated through six games, including an 18-4 victory over Los Angeles earlier in the day. In the championship game, Larry Haley was the winning pitcher, doubled and tripled.

Three pitchers combined for the 10th no-hitter in Pony League World Series history as Seoul, South Korea, won the championship by beating La Mesa, 15-0. La Mesa hit only two balls out of the infield. Seoul lost its bid for a perfect game when its right fielder dropped Saul Rodriguez’s fly ball with one out in the top of the seventh inning.

FOOTBALL

Unhappy with his demotion to backup, former Orange Glen High quarterback Duffy Daugherty likely will transfer to Palomar Junior College, he said.

RUNNING

Registration for the America’s Finest City Half Marathon will be held today from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina. Fee is $22. A maximum of 6,000 runners will be accepted; current registration is a little more than 4,000. There will be no race-day registration.

GOLF

Phil Mickelson of San Diego strengthened his hold on the American Junior Golf Assn. Tournament of Champions by shooting a 4-under-par 68 to build a 6-shot lead after three rounds at Roswell, Ga. Mickelson, attempting to win the title for the third consecutive year, is at 8-under 208 with a round to play. Harry Rudolph of La Jolla is third at 69-217.

SAILING

Colin Park of Midland, Mich., Lenny Krawcheck of Charleston, S.C. and Tony McBride of Quebec, Canada are leading their divisions after five races in the Lightning Class North American Championships at the Mission Bay Yacht Club. Park is leading the Championship Fleet with 22 points, Krawcheck the President’s Cup with 23 points and McBride the Governor’s Cup with 19 points.
