Athletes In Action Beats Oregon, Ends Losing Streak at 14

San Diego-based Athletes In Action broke a 14-game losing streak with a 93-88 victory in men’s basketball against the University of Oregon Tuesday at Eugene.

AIA led, 51-45, at the half and never trailed in the second half, although Oregon tied the score four times.

Lorenzo Romar led AIA with 32 points, including 5 3-pointers. Rod Foster added 20 points with 4 3-pointers. Zack Jones had 18 points.

AIA plays the University of Victoria tonight at Abbotsford, Canada.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Tracy Ragatz scored 4 3-point baskets in the second half to lead UC San Diego to a 71-68 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Triton Gym.

Ragatz led UCSD with 18 points; Beth Koenig scored 14 and Jill Koster had 10. Bernadette Diepenbrock had 8 points and 19 rebounds for the Tritons (3-1).

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (3-1) led, 36-32, at the half.

FOOTBALL

Dan Fouts will be the 69th athlete to be inducted into the Breitbard Hall of Fame, Jack Monger, the executive director of the San Diego Hall of Champions announced Tuesday.

Fouts will be inducted during the 43rd annual Salute to the Champions dinner March 7.

TENNIS

In women’s 40s singles of the National Senior Hardcourt Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, Cathie Anderson of Rancho Santa Fe defeated Peggy Van Court of Austin, Tex., 6-0, 6-3, making her the only San Diego singles entrant to make it past the opening round.

Sheila Palmer and Paula Shifrel of La Jolla, Ana Morataya and Aurora Zamar of San Diego, Lesley Waite of Del Mar and Tate Gooch of Solana Beach also were defeated.

In women’s 40s doubles, San Diego’s Jo Konrath and Zamar advanced to the third round with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Gail Dunham and Anne Kern of San Diego. Liane Bryson and Maricaye Daniels of Encinitas also advanced.

Second- and third-round matches begin today at 9 a.m. The tournament ends Sunday.
